Dante Leon Biography

In the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, few names resonate as loudly as Dante Leon. Born on May 6, 1995, in the small town of Harrow, Ontario, Canada, Dante has carved a niche for himself as one of the most formidable grapplers of his generation. His journey into the world of combat sports began at the tender age of 6, thanks to his father's influence. However, it wasn't until he was 12 years old that he discovered his true calling—Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The Early Years

Dante's initial foray into martial arts was through boxing and other striking-based arts. But once he was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by his first instructor, Dean Hersche, there was no turning back. Dante was hooked, and within a year, he knew that grappling was his destiny. He initially trained under the Gracie Humaitá/Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu banner, where he progressed from white to purple belt.

The Turning Point

As Dante's ambitions grew, so did his need for a more competitive training environment. This led him to GF Team, under the tutelage of Vitor Oliveira and Júlio César Pereira. His friend Kelly Hymore played a pivotal role in this transition, introducing Dante to Abraham Marte and later to Vitor Oliveira. Under their guidance, Dante and his good friend Gutemberg Pereira moved to Toledo, Ohio, to train full-time at GFT Toledo.

A String of Achievements

Dante's list of achievements is nothing short of impressive. He is a Kasai 170 lbs Champion (2020), IBJJF World Championship NOGI winner (2019), and has multiple first-place finishes at the IBJJF Pans Championship NOGI (2018/2017). His grappling record boasts 116 wins, with a staggering 64% of those coming by submission.

The Technique Maestro

Dante is known for his well-rounded game, but his favorite techniques include chokes from the back and various heel hooks. He competes in the Peso Médio weight division, which is approximately 82.30 kg or 181.5 lbs.
